Context as topic sentence for Module A

Hi guys!

So i'm in a bit of a dilemma here. My english teacher gave us an exempler essay with body paragraphs which opened with a sentence of context, rather than a direct answer to  question. She recommend that we follow the structure of that essay, however my ex teacher told us to always have the topic sentence answer the question (which makes a lot more sense tbh.)

However, i've already my essay and i feel like i don't have have time to change my essay around; i've already spent too much time on eng adv.

Would this opening for one of my body paragraphs work for this question?: “An examination of a pair of texts reveals similarities in their concerns and their contexts.”

Post-WWII America was a period of social and economic success, with the ‘baby-boomers’ and popularisation of the ‘American Dream’ a response to this new-found prosperity. The Hours explores the role of women during the era of nuclear families, and like Mrs Dalloway, the consequences when one cannot fulfil societies strict expectations.

Also, is this question generic enough for me to memorise and adapt? i'm terrible at writing on the spot :/

Thanks!!!

Was the exemplar response from Cambridge? If so, I have noticed with their Mod A sample essays that their introductions especially are garbage. They don't answer the question. An opening sentence I would go for would answer the question and also include the influence of context, for instance here's mine from last year for JC and the Prince: Both William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince are concerned with ambition, and more significantly, the role which morality plays within both achieving and maintaining power. However, their treatment of these concerns differ dependent on the context in which they composed.

Something like that :)

Hmm, i'm pretty sure my teacher wrote it herself, which worries me more. Thanks for the advice :)

Hey there,
Just to extend on dancing phalanges' point, your essays should be structured thematically- that's why your thesis is important because it gives the marker an idea on your overarching understanding of the text (if that makes sense lol). Your topic sentence just makes your arguments narrow. Your context shouldn't be your topic sentence because you're not indicating what your paragraph will be about; it should be intertwined with your analysis to enhance your interpretation.

For example, I'm doing 1984/Metropolis so I could talk about how the working class is portrayed in Metropolis and link it to how it reflects the political tensions during the Weimar Republic.

Considering how you mentioned that your teacher wrote it, maybe try asking another English teacher at your school? If they agree with your teacher, you're gonna have to go with it since they're marking your essays and then in the HSC, focus more on themes rather than context.

Hope this helps!
