Typed vs. Handwritten study notes

Hello!

I just have a question regarding typed vs. handwritten study notes for the HSC. With the trials coming up, I've decided to rewrite my study notes to make them more concise and neat and whatnot. Until now, all my notes have been handwritten, but lately I've been wondering if typed up notes would be more effective in the long run.

On the one hand, I think handwritten notes are more effective in retaining content because you are forced to process what you're writing down in your brain. However, they tend to become messy over the year, and as I add new information to them it ends up becoming convoluted and NOT concise lol.

On the other hand, with typed up notes you can easily edit and cut out parts that you don't need. They're more portable as well, because they're just on your laptop or phone. However, I don't want to spend hours and hours in front of the computer screen, and also they're not as helpful in retaining content in the long run (imo)

I reckon you should do both. It will make sure you know the content back to front, and you will have a back up of your notes on your laptop to refer back to either way. Whatever works for you honestly. but I found that this really helped me as I found that I was learning the content twice and it really sunk in. Type your notes up, be as detailed as you want. But then write them out under the dotpoint in your own words on paper. That way you get the main points down and your brain is working to obtain the information and decipher it

I'm definitely a strong advocate for typed notes
I don't think the memory retention factor is that big.
Besides with typed ones, they're faster so then you can devote time to things like past papers. Time that would be otherwise be spent handwriting notes

I’ve always handwritten my notes throughout year 12, however this term for legal I decided I would experiment with typing, and honestly it was amazing. I never realised how much MORE time it takes me to write notes until I typed them. I don’t know if I’ll ALWAYS type from now, but I mean just the time saving itself has convinced me it’s beneficial.

And I didn’t notice a difference regarding memory retention, as long as you go over your typed notes again and revise them tbh it should be fine.

Throughout the term I type all mine, making them fairly concise, and with case studies/statistics/quotes with them where necessary
For revision, I summarise every syllabus dot point or rubric point in one drawing, and this is really helpful for me!
