This is such a stupid question, but with every quote you use in an english essay, do you have to have a language technique/device to go with it? For instance, the two quotes below are ones that I use to support my argument in one of my modules, but they don't have literary techniques (or not that I can think of), so what should I do??  :-\

- “I don’t know how he managed to put up with Gran"
- “She smelt like Mum”

Hey!!

Not much good at English... However I believe that all evidence you use needs to support both your idea and the question and in order to prove this you need to use your techniques.

Not sure what your book is or the context... However simply the first quote you may be able to say the author in his memoir reflects on his history and how ... Was about to put up with this grandmother..... Using the memoir text type as the technique....

The second quote could be...
The simile of 'She smelt like my mother' allows the audience to relate to the character and the connection with the personas mother....

Sorry. Probably totally wrong and out of context. Hopefully someone else will reply but I just know what it's like to be left hanging 😀

Hello! Yes you do need a language technique and/or device with every quote since you are being marked on how you analyse the text and how the technique creates meaning.

headsup pretty much hit the nail on the head for the techniques and everything they said in their reply !! You can possibly use assonance as a technique for the second quote as well if you didn't want to go down the simile road.
Which will hold greater rule over you? Your fear or your curiosity?
