Are we allowed to use quotes/examples from 2016 onwards in the exam or is it only 2017 onwards?

Quotes and linguist references can be used from absolutely any time!
It's just media/contemporary examples that have to be used from this year, or maybe from November and December 2017 can possibly be accepted too.

Good luck for Friday! :)

2017 : Further Maths [38]
2018 : English [45] ;English Language [43] ; Food Studies [47] ;French [33] ;Legal Studies [39]
VCE ATAR : 98.10
2019 - 2023 : Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts at Monash University

I'm selling a huge electronic copy of  VCE English essays and resources document (with essays that have teacher feedback and marks) for $10. Feel free to PM me for details!

So if I use an example from 2016, would I get marked down?

If you use a media example from 2016, it's not 'contemporary' enough. The quality of your evidence will be affected, because the assessors will challenge you and think well we're in 2018 now, there are huge advancements in the linguistic world until 2018!
So if it leads them to thinking these sorts of questions, the quality of your evidence isn't going to impress them!
Remember, your essay marks are divided into 4 sections: your ideas, how you approach the topic, your examples, and your expression.
So in terms of examples and ideas criteria, they might think a 2016 example isn't 'lively' and 'engaging' enough.

I know it's so tempting to use really great examples from previous years, right?!! Happens to me a lot too!
But you've just got to stick to 'contemporary'! (meaning since Nov 2017)

2018 : English [45] ;English Language [43] ; Food Studies [47] ;French [33] ;Legal Studies [39]

^Agree. 2018 examples are ideal if at all possible.
