When there is a change in 1 base do you say point or substitution?
If there is change in many bases due to add or delete do you say insertion/deletion or frameshift?

Change in one base = Substitution (Silent/Missense/Nonsense)

Change in many bases = Frameshift mutation

i would say point mutation... thats the most common word ive heard... dont hear many people say substitution mutation but i think they are basically the same so wateva...but if you write substitution write single base substitution... so they know what you mean

insertion and deletion is the type of mutation... frameshift mutation is the consequence but again they basically the same thing when bases are inserted it can lead to frameshift mutation etc...

Point mutation: Change involving one base
- Substitution: Replacing one base
- Addition: Adding one base
- Subtraction: Removing one base

Length mutation: Change involving multiple bases
- Insertion: Adding a length of bases
- Deletion: Deleting a length of bases
- Substitution (not too sure about this one): Same as above

When they say type, choose from one of the above. I'd probably say something like, "It is a point mutation involving the substitution of A for G".

If they ask the results, then;

Consequences
- Frameshift: Consequent change in codons downstream from the mutation itself
- Non-sense: Change of AA-coding codon into a stop
- Mis-sense: Change of AA-coding codon into another AA-coding codon
- Silent: No change due to redundancy of genetic code
