I am currently preparing for my first HSC assessment - short answer comprehension - and it would be super helpful if someone could give me feedback on these responses. I have attached copies of the texts for reference. Thank you
Question 1 (for the novel): Explain the writer's use of sensory imagery in evoking an aspect of human experience. (2 marks)
The writer uses visual imagery to evoke the experience of wonder through exploring the unknown. The description of "water taxis with rotting thatched roofs" is demonstrating to the reader the images that Marina is seeing for the first time. In turn, the effect of this imagery is evident in the realisation for Marina that "she was in another world entirely," evoking this experience of wonder through exploring the river unknown to her.
Question 2 (for the poem): How does the line arrangement of the poem contribute to conveying an aspect of human experience? (3 marks)
The poem uses a new line when there is a new idea of what lies beyond the door. This is done in order to convey the experience of courage in stepping out of one's 'comfort zone.' The door is a metaphor for the unknown opportunities lying outside of where people feel safe, and unless this door is opened, new things can never be discovered. Separating the lines of "even if," "nothing," "is there," "go and open the door" allow the reader to continuously step away from the previous line and discover the words of the next line.
