Bachelor of Science at Monash

Hi all,
With Bachelor of Science at Monash University, to be considered a spot for the MD program, you'll need to complete 5 designated units. I have learned that you usually have two of those units in a major so does that mean you'll have to do 2 majors and a minor? Also, if any of you have successfully transferred from bachelor of science to MD, can you please give me some suggestion on what major to choose? I have locked my eyes on one or two out of biochemistry, immunology and physiology, these are purely my passion, but is there something you reckon that'll make my life "easier" if I'm considering MD, like one that'll help with gamsat preparation or something? I know if I do well enough at Monash, I wouldn't need to sit the gamsat, but I always like to have a back up(like science to biomedical science😢 still can't get over that I might miss out coz of 1 study score for methods)

Any valuable suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how you allocate the units. Usually people are able to do either 1 major (either normal or extended major) + 1-2 minors or 2 majors + no minors, due to the way the BSci is structured at Monash (as there's also a few other compulsory aspects e.g. you must take SCI2010 or SCI2015 in 2nd year, and you need to complete 2 "sequences" e.g. Biology + Chemistry in first year, which cuts down on your ability to do 2 majors + any minors, except in rare cases). There's also limits as to how many first/second year units you can take from memory, so keep those in mind too.

If I recall correctly (but do note I'm not the best with postgrad med entry, so take with grain of salt), the 5 units for MD entry are units you can do as electives, minors or majors. (Basically as long as you take the 5 units eventually, it doesn't really matter whether you minored in it or not.)

Also, if any of you have successfully transferred from bachelor of science to MD, can you please give me some suggestion on what major to choose?
Technically it's not a transfer, but more of a transition. The MD is a postgrad degree, meaning it's done after you complete your entire BSci (3 years full time minimum). A transfer implies that you'd be switching into the MD partway into your BSci, which is not the case in this scenario. To be accepted into any postgrad degree e.g. Masters, you must have fully and successfully completed an undergraduate degree e.g. Bachelor.

I have locked my eyes on one or two out of biochemistry, immunology and physiology, these are purely my passion, but is there something you reckon that'll make my life "easier" if I'm considering MD, like one that'll help with gamsat preparation or something? I wouldn't say that any one major is necessarily easier than the other, as this would differ between people, their strengths and weaknesses.

Do note though that the Bachelor of Science does not ask you to pick a major until second year and you don't do any of the 5 units required for MD entry in your first year (unless you did something like MUEP Biology, perhaps).

As for GAMSAT, I know very little about what is involved there, so I will leave this for more knowledgeable people to respond.

P.S. If you transfer after a semester/ year into Biomed, from memory, you will be considered as a Biomed student when entering for the MD so will have access to the allocated spots for Monash Biomed students.
