Here's the email I've got. It applies to BSc but I'm pretty sure it's for other new generation degrees too. I think they've done this so it wouldn't be too easy for students to apply for some easy language and satisfy the Level 3 breadth requirement...
Dear XXXXX,
From 2010 the introductory or beginners level language subjects that are offered at multiple levels (e.g. Level 1, 2, 3) will only be available to new generation Bachelor of Science students as Level 1 breadth subjects.
These changes have been approved by Academic Board and the Handbook will be updated to reflect this shortly.
Other subjects offered at multiple levels that have an introductory level language as the standard prerequisite will only be available to new generation BSc students as Level 2 subjects. From 2010, a BSc student’s first year of tertiary level language study must be taken at Level 1.
Where subjects (particularly language subjects) are listed as available at multiple year levels BSc students may only take the subjects at the lower level.
The University apologises for the late notification. However the issue of introductory level subjects available at multiple year levels was not identified until after the publication of the 2010 Handbook and the commencement of re-enrolment.
