Deferment

Hey guys, I have a serious problem. In 2010, I'm required to perform National Service for my country meaning I'm going to be away for 2 YEARS!!!
I've read about deferment of courses in the RMIT website but it says that the maximum deferment length is 1 year. Will they be flexible about this? What else can I do? Anyone have similar problems or experiences?

At Monash, you can defer for a year and intermit for up to a year as well... intermitting is basically where you take a semester or two off from your studies while you are completing your degree... however occassionally some people (such as me) intermit at the start of their studies. It's not exactly the norm, but at RMIT, it might also be possible to defer for a year, then enrol but intermit your studies for a year on top of this.

That would give you the two years you need I suppose... you have been placed in a difficult position though... this is going to require a fair bit of research on your behalf.

Singapore definitely has some form of compulsory conscription for its young men.
I can't say I know many details about it though...

thanks

someone in the other thread suggested that I take a leave of absence. http://www.su.rmit.edu.au/rights/defer.html maybe I''ll do that. But I'll still call to enquire

Yeah, a "leave of absence" is basically the RMIT version of "intermitting".
