Irregular offers and 2nd round scholarships
« on: January 12, 2010, 12:19:34 am »

I understand that the 2nd round of scholarship offers begins on the 18th - the day of 1st round course offers. Is it possible to be offered a second round scholarship in that time for a course for which you are intending to make an irregular offer? How might I indicate to the university in question that I'm still interested in a scholarship, despite not yet having an offer to that institution on the 18th (as I can only make irregular offers after that date)?

A bit of context - I did not receive a 1st round scholarship to UoM before preferences closed. I am now going to make an irregular offer for Arts at UoM on the 18th. However, I'm assuming that UoM would not even consider me for a 2nd round scholarship as I will obviously not have an offer for UoM on the day that 2nd round scholarships begin. ARRGGHH why didn't I get my preferences right.

Perhaps more importantly, I don't know if my ENTER score would even place me in the ballpark for a 2nd round scholarship. Any ideas as to whether I've got a shot?

Thanks - and sorry for the rambling!

I was faced with a similar situation, and just had to make the hard decision with what I had.

I had a Monash scholarship, but I would have preferred UoM if I could get a scholarship from there (closer to my house).
I didn't get a UoM 1st round scholarship, and I decided to pick Monash instead of gambling on the chance I would get some sort of access/equity scholarship from UoM.

I know this probably isn't much help... but at least you get another perspective.

I'm not sure on this one.  Best way to find out would be to call VTAC on 1300 364 133 and ask if irregular offer applicants are eligible for second round scholarships into their preferred course.  It's toll free - the best part.  :)

However, my guess is unfortunately, no.  I think that because as you said:

...I'm assuming that UoM would not even consider me for a 2nd round scholarship as I will obviously not have an offer for UoM on the day that 2nd round scholarships begin.

The people at UoM wouldn't see your name and as you know applying for an Irregular Offer takes time because of the number of things you need to do.  I would imagine that by the time the selection officer offers you a place at UoM, all the scholarships would have been given out.  Remember, this year, there's no such thing as Round 3 any more.  Just round 1, round 2 and a supplementary round.

Pretty sure UoM only give out scholarships to access melbourne people and those with ENTERs of 99.9+, so you pretty much had no hope anyway:P

Thanks Gloamgloazer. I will call VTAC but my guess is similar to yours - I don't see how it would be possible to be considered.

@schmalex - I have a seas app. so that counts as access melbourne afaik.

Yes, call them up tomorrow and if you don't mind, can you please keep us informed?  I'm curious to know what will happen as well.

No, Having a SEAS application already makes you eligible for an Access Melbourne scholarship.

EDIT:

Quote
Steps to apply

2. Submit a SEAS Access and Equity application by 5pm, Friday 9 October 2009

DOUBLE EDIT:  Actually, you also have to fit this criteria:

Quote
To be eligible for Access Melbourne you must:
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent Humanitarian Visa; and
  • have not been awarded results in a degree course at a tertiary institution in Australia (this does not apply to applicants for the mature age consideration category and does not include single, bridging schemes or extension studies undertaken as part of Year 12); and
  • have demonstrated the capacity to successfully undertake the course of your choice; and
  • apply for a University of Melbourne course through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
