sorry to bombard u guys with questions :-[

what does the 'relative area' mean? is it the ratio of H in each environment  or the ratio of H compared to other environments?

I dont understand how the splitting thingo occurs and what it means and why we have to use the neighbouring compound thingo to determine the amount of peaks. what does the peaks mean realtive to the component?

What are chemical shifts? IN the data booklet, they talk about this but i dont understand what the values represent?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH  :smitten:

i don't like either!
but i think it is the ratio of H compared to other environments.

i remember it as a peak for an environment means it is next to an environment with that number of fine peaks minus one.

e.g.  a peak with 4 fine peaks means that hydrogen environment is next to a hydrogen environment with 3 hydrogen's.
you can also compare the chemical shift to the data book to try and work out what is responsible for each peak.
