How many in CH3CH2COOCH2CH3?

I'm not sure if the answer is 3 or 4...

BTW this is my first chem post!
Excited :D

5. Each environment is different

isn't this just ethyl propanoate hence there are 4 environments..?

H environments, yes there are 4. I was thinking of C environments...

The molecule is not symmetrical.
So even though you have two CH3's, they are not equivalent.
The distance from the oxygens will alter their shifts.
So your answer is four.

All hydrogens in the CH3 environments are the same aren't they as the shielding is only affected by adjacent atoms so the oxygen wont affect the environment. The answer is 3 im pretty sure. In other words both CH3 groups can be represented as R-CH3. The CH2 groups on the other hand are different as once is adjacent to two carbon atoms while the other is adjacent to a CH3 and an O.
This is right isn't it?

This is what I have been taught. I would say 3

No, there are four.

CH3-CH2-O, as seen by the ethyl group, the H in CH3 is 3 bonds away from O
CH3-CH2-COO, as seen by the carboxylate, the H in CH3 is 4 bonds away from O2-
The connectivity is very different.
