just take it in steps:
y is greater than x                             y>x
y is greater than double of x                y>2x
y is greater than double of x by 3          y>2x+3

So whatever the value of x is, y will always 3 more than double of x. But a better way of expressing it might be: y is 3 more than double of x.

But y>2x+3 means "y is greater than 3 more of double of x"

y = 2x+3 would mean "y is 3 more than double of x"

Yeah, since it is specified that y is exactly 3 greater than the double of x you need an equals sign, not a greater than.

LOL I find it funny how a year 7/8 question is causing us so much trouble

lol who cares seriously, it's just english. It just shows how shit of a language it is. I'm not even convinced of mine.

Not like I lost any sleep over it lol.

And lol Kamil English isn't elegant enough for maths, only numbers and symbols allow us to appreciate mathematics :P.
