not feeling uni - advice please

I'm supposed to go back to Monash today and I'm really not feeling it. Going there doesn't feel right any more, I'm not excited about it. I want to go to University of Melbourne but they STILL haven't assessed my application and I don't know what to do. Should I:

a) Go to Monash, buy the books, just stay there.
b) Go to Monash until my application gets assessed at UoM. Try and survive the week without buying any of my books.
c) Don't go this week, hope I get into UoM. If I don't, discontinue at Monash and apply at UoM through VTAC for next year (do I need to get a new VTAC ID or is my one from year 12 still current).

How long has it been since you submitted your midyear transfer? I remember you from another thread a while ago? Did they confirm that they have it and are processing it?

If they're just being incompetent and taking forever, I'd personally spend the week at Monash until UoM finishes deciding so you can at least finish the semester there. If you drop semester 2, is there something you'll do instead?

Yes it WAS a while ago. I submitted it on the 15th of June, documentation in by the 17th. I've called soo many times to find out what's going on and they still don't know. The only thing they've been able to tell me is it will be assessed by the 26th (wow, that gives me plenty of time to create a timetable and get organised for it).

Find a full time job? Not really enthused about this idea though haha.

That's pretty terrible, since O-week for mid year entry is meant to start on Wednesday this week. I'd try to tough it out for another semester, but if you're not interested and you think your marks will suffer then taking the semester off to earn some money and restart next year might be a better idea.

Try to survive without the books this week, but go to uni just in case. You definitely should call up UoM admissions and ask them (politely) if they can give you any information about the status of your application, or if there is a timeline for offers.

May I ask why you aren't 'feeling it'?

I've taken a year off and I'm learning a language so I'm freaked out about going back having forgotten everything and being really behind. I've done some revision for German but I haven't spoken it out loud in a year and I wish I could just start it again. Deferring was very stupid. I also really don't want to do journalism but I can't change it as I need a first year sequence. I know a lot more people who go to UoM, but then again I haven't really given ~making friends~ at Monash a chance. It's depressing because all the friends I did make last year have moved on to second year and we don't talk any more. I just need a new start but it's probably all in my head. I'm here at Monash now and it's okay.

Is it possible to just borrow the textbooks from the library? That's what I do when I'm not sure if they're worth buying or not.

I think you shouldn't stay at Monash if it doesn't motivate you. University takes up a large portion of time and if your heart isn't into it then you won't get the most from the experience.

All the advice here has been really good. I just wanted to add that you have no reason to be worried about German. The German department isn't very strict - all the people are lovely and relaxed - and the work is very easy IMO. I also didn't touch German for a year, went straight back into level 5 with people fresh out of VCE and had no problems at all and my German isn't even that good.

I'm sorry to hear that your application still hasn't been assessed.  I've already received the outcome of my application, albeit unsuccessful, I had to push them to get my application through.  It was processed by the faculty I applied so if you're applying for Arts, it would go through the Arts faculty.

At this stage, they should have processed nearly all, if not all of the applications.  This week is O-Week so they should have let you know already.  Knowing some administrative UoM staff, the best course of action I would recommend would to find some time and physically rock up to the Office of Admissions and ask them to personally resolve the issue right there.  I can understand your frustration and I absolutely loathe being given the "cold shoulder".

We've spoken about this before and personally, I think this is pretty slack given that this is a mistake of their behalf, not yours and you are forced to wait.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there are any official avenues for complaints for non-students but if you were a student and this was a problem with a particular faculty, I would have given their backsides a good kick.

I handed my transcript in this morning and I found out before 5 that I've been offered a spot in science at melb, so I find it incredible you still haven't heard anything. Your situation really is awful, but hopefully you can resolve it and I'll see you at melbourne this semester!

@OP what course are you applying for? I agree with whoever said you should go down there and ask someone from the relevant student center to sort it out.

Just as an aside, earlier today my facebook news feed had half a dozen status updates from friends who were sitting in line waiting to sort out their enrolment, so that might be the way to go?

You're welcome Ryley.  I wish you the very best at UoM in whatever you wish you pursue. 

The OP is applying for Arts and it seems it's the Arts faculty that's having problems.  On a separate note, I heard that the Music students are also attached to the Arts faculty.  If that's the case, I reckon they should really invest in splitting the faculty up.

Yes Bachelor of Arts. I'm actually so far going okay, it seems German is really easy and that a LOT of people in my class are struggling to keep up with the most basic work :S
 My only other major issue with Monash was that I had to do Journalism (to get my first year sequence, since I changed out of linguistics into something else this semester) but I talked to a student advisor today and they told me I could do the second part (semester one) of my first year sequence next year, since I'm doing a diploma of languages I should be able to fit it all in. Thanks heaps for your advice, guys. Still nothing from UoM so I'm giving up and trying to embrace Monash.
