I don't know why your subjects or being in year 11 is relevant...?

It's an extracurricular activity, if you enjoy debating and/or public speaking then go for it.

Well some people have said that debating and other such activities may take up a lot of time.. so I just added that information as a way of defining my situation atm

DAV debating takes up a bit of time because it's a formal competition and you have to get to the debates at night etc. House debating is going to be more casual/laidback.

You're in year 11 anyway, don't worry about it using up time. Worry about that next year :P

Just do it.  I spent at least 10 hours a week on co-currics this year.

A leadership position is good for life.

I do orchestra, inter-school debating, symphonic wind ensemble, drama (three plays this year), house debating, choir, singing lessons and a host of prefect duties.

Yes it sure is. It gives your life meaning. You can get really sick of studying, and as long as you have time in the week to do the work, there is nothing wrong with debating. In fact, if you want to be really nerdy about it, it will help you with your first English SAC which is an oral presentation, and will better your speaking skills which may help in an interview situation for med. Other than that, it is a thoroughly enjoyable sport.

I say do it if you believe you can write and prepare a debate in a reasonable amount of time. If you dread public speaking and a debate is going to overshadow your entire week, it's probably not a good idea.

I don't really agree with killercrossover's line of reasoning - your English oral is one SAC with no part to play in the end of year exam. It's not even a large SAC - it's 20% of Unit 3, meaning it's 5% of your SS for English even before your exam scales your SACs. Rather I think the true advantage of debating lies in it enhancing your oratory skills. Persuasiveness and incisive articulation will help you in *any* career, without exception.

i don't see what's wrong with doing extra curricular activities during vce. like evangelion, i spend heaps of time in co-curricular activities -- it forces you to take a break and not spend all your time studying.
