For those of you considering actuarial studies...

Well many people have asked me what type of maths actuarial studies involves and what kinda stuff you do in it, so I thought I'd share it with everyone.

Recently I've been accepted into the Monash Actuarial studies program and received some handouts, the maths is actually AMAZING (better than I thought), ranging from calculus, probability and much more!

I've attached the files so you guys can see for yourself first hand what kind of things are taught. Once I receive more materials I will upload them too!

Also here's a link (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=50W3OLFS) of an introductory (but beware the maths is more than introductory!) actuarial studies book which covers alot of the stuff you need to know for the first few exams you have to take if you do decide to do Actuarial studies [In fact /0 shared this book with and I've been reading it whenever I have the time, it is great and covers from the most fundamental/basic probability to some very advanced stuff]. It is also useful for Methods students out there who want to further their probability knowledge. Again, the maths is AMAZING and very interesting.

so YOU ARE doing act stud now????

What can you say about Monash's acturial program??? How good is it? And what is the deal with accrediatation?

From my knowledge, next year will be the first year you can take actuarial studes as a major at monash.

So does this mean ur dropping finance tt??

Nope, I'm still doing finance but also picking up actuarial studies, hoping that I can cope with the overloading next year :)

Basically the program I am doing now ascertains whether I will be capable of doing actuarial studies next year. We have 2 tutes and then an exam.

Well I've just started the program so I can't say how good it is just yet, but you can find the answer to the rest of your questions here: http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/ebs/student/undergrad/actuarial/faq.php

Quote
The Institute has appointed a Panel of actuaries to oversee Monash’s application for accreditation and they have delegated to this Panel power to grant accreditation in the remaining four Part I subjects CT1 “Mathematics of Finance”, CT4 “Models”, CT5 “Contingencies” & CT6 “Statistical methods”.

the attached pdf looks utterly dry and boring to me - seems like microeconomics (at least, we call it that here).  the linked book looks like fun, but seems to just be a book on probability.  (pure) maths is much better :P

Yeah definitely agreed with you but you have to admit, some of the probability is really interesting...
