When you are describing the impact of an article, is it better to write:

"Writer X uses emotional appeal to acknowledge his target audience"

OR

"Writer X uses emotional appeal. This ensures that the target audience feels acknowledged"

The concern I have with doing it the first way is that will the examiner be able to clearly identify the impact? Like for the 2nd one, the impact is stated directly whereas it isn't as direct in the first form. It's also a case of my english teacher continuosly grinding into my head to write it in the second form that I've almost becoming fearful of doing it any other way.

I agree with the first one. The more you can pack into a sentence, the better control of writing you exert. If you are able to write about the example, evidence and analysis all in one sentence it is definitely a plus. Have a look at past exam papers, the best responses often place example, evidence and analysis in one sentence.
