Can someone give me a definition for a discourse marker and what functions does it serve? Thanks.

Firstly, ensure that a discourse marker should not be confused with a discourse particle.

A discourse marker serves to change the direction of the discourse. For example  "you know", "actually", "basically", "like", "I mean", and "okay" are all discourse markers as you could use one like this "okay but what about my car?"

A discourse particle has no meaning and doesnt change the direction of the discourse and only serves to give the reader time to think and this is a non fluency feature.

hope that makes sense :)

BTW, the study design states discourse particle !
'Keep you friends close, but keep your enemies closer'
