Hey guys,
i was having trouble understanding why strong acids have a higher change in pH when diluted in comparison to weak acids.

weak acids only partially ionises in solution, and so when a dilution occurs, this attempts to push the reaction to the right to create more ions as equilibrium reactions do, but since it only partially ionises, only a small change occurs when trying to re-establish equilibrium. compare this to a strong acid where it fully ionises and so when it dilutes, it will be by a perfect factor of 10.
acid + h20 --> acid (missing H) + H30+
^ that equilibrium equation with dilution pushes to the right,
strong just is going to change completely in it's exact amounts, whilst weak only partially ionises that amount, make sense?
