Nineteen Eighty-Four Big Ideas

I thought as the exams are breathing down our necks now and we've all been studying like crazy that we could compile a topic discussing the big ideas in 1984 and how and why they are shown by Mr.Orwell...

I'll start:

Power: Orwell is saying that the need for power is existant in evrybody. And that this need must be met to an extent at the cost of another. This is shown most through O'brien as he is like CRAZY for power.
Also Winstons desire to gain back the power over his movements leads to his demise. The Party is obviously stark crazy on a power trip.
This is done by orwell to say 'watch your back' because there will always be someone whocraves power.

Also we should build on others' ideas and improve them....
It would be great if this works.
Thanks

(I will add more when others start to as well)

rather than saying that the Party is on a power trip you could say that they're fearful of people like winston? that could explain the thought police and the thought reform they force them through.

edit: perhaps also why they are introducing newspeak which aims to make it impossible to commit thought reform

this is a interesting thread :) hmm....themes of 1984

i guess one of the most important aspects of it is found in the techniques the Party employs to manipulate the minds of Oceanians, most importantly those of a psychological nature in room 101 and doublethink

- pillars of control - totalitarian regime
- lack of humanity
- lack of hope
