Okay, So I was planning on having a gap year next year and travel around Asia for a year but I am a little short on money for doing it next year.
So I was wondering if I study a course that goes for 3 years, and I start next year is it possible to have 2012 off and travel and then come back and be in my 2nd year in 2013?

At the University of Melbourne, that is possible.  In your undergraduate course you are allowed to take up to two semesters (ie. a year) off during your degree.  You are allowed to take each semester separately or take the full year at one go if you like.

Yep. It's called a leave of absence. You have to apply and you have to have done a full year to be eligible.
