My friend told me that you cant get straight into medicine after VCE no matter how well your ATAR is and that you have to do an undergrad in something and transfer into med.  So guys is this true????  I was planning to go straight into med but now im not sure.... :)

You need to perform exceptionally well in the interview and the UMAT. So yes you cant get straight into medicine even with a 99.95.

It increases your chances though. For Monash MBBS it is rumored that the weight of the assessments is 25% atar 25% Umat, and 50% Interview.

If you aren't successful in your application to Monash, then there are many other paths you can take to get into med, including what your friend told you: by transferring in. (when people drop out)

Alternatively, you can do graduate medicine once you complete an undergraduate degree, but this still requires you to sit a GAMSAT and face an interview.

If you're determined to get into Med, i'm sure you'll get there one way or another eventually.

No, your friend is wrong. You do not have to transfer into medicine, you can go directly in (but be aware it's not based solely on ATAR)

I don't think it's even possible to transfer into med. You need to apply before you've done any university or only after you have finished an entire degree.

You can transfer into some degrees but that's the hardest way to do it

I think zibb3r was referring to the Melbourne Model and meant that one had to do an undergrad degree then apply for graduate entry Med, which is true.

zibb3r: Your friend is right only for SOME universities such as UniMelb and the ANU. However, many universities today such as Monash and UNSW have undergrad med programs. However you would have had to sit the UMAT and from that you would have needed an interview; did you do the UMAT and have an interview?

NB: Your UMAT need only be within 10 points of the cutoff if you get 99.95 - you would receive a late interview offer under the Dean's Excellence List.

There are also a few courses in other states that look at ATAR and leave out UMAT.  But ATAR must be very high typically.  USyd have an undergrad med degree as a double degree (eg. comm/med, sci/med, etc.) for interstate students who get 99.95...but based also on interview.
UQ have a similar program based on ATAR.

I also know a friend who is transferring from first year biomed into a ugrad med degree next year.

But yeh, the majority of courses are as outlined by others.
2008: Mathematical Methods (49)
2009: English (50), Specialist Mathematics (47), Chemistry (49), Physics (49), Latin (44)

I think your friend is referring to the Melbourne Model :)

For med you need a decent ATAR, a good UMAT, and a good interview
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.
