Exceeding total credit points required for a course

Just a quick question, what happens when you exceed the total credit points required for a course?

For example, let's say a student is currently doing engineering/science double degree. For the science component of his degree, he decides to major in astrophysics and he enrolls into the first year astrophysics unit (ASP1010) and he successfully completes it. But then he decide it's not the right path for him and he chooses to major in Computer Science instead. That means he will end up with an additional 6 credit points. Will this violate any rules? Will he be able to graduate?

Also, what happens when a student enters let's say an engineering course and hasn't done specialist for example. The student will have to pick up a unit that is equivalent to specialist. Since the foundation unit isn't really part of the course, wouldn't this mean an additional 6 credit points will be added to the total credit points?

I'm just really curious about this.

Your help will be appreciated.

I think it's possible. Speak to the faculty office about this.

At the end of the day, each credit point will incur more HECS debt for you. It's not free, so i don't see why not.

If you complete all requirements of your degree, aka completed right amount of majors/minors and completed a certain amount of subjects, then exceeding the max credits will then be full fee. I believe in Science Faculty you can only take more than the max only if you change your major in later years

At UoM, we don't let you automatically.  You have to apply for "over enrolment" from your relevant faculty.

Yes, believe it or not, that word "over enrolment" actually exists...
