Year of Wonders Oral Presentation

Hey guys,

Our first SAC for English will be an oral presentation of Year of WOnder. So if anyone had any ideas on what I could possible talk about it would be greatly appreciated. It has to be 5 mins long, so I'm having a bit of difficulty finding something to talk about for that long.

Any other tips would also be a help :)

Ummm maybe a role play sort of thing, I'm not sure what guidelines you have but I'd put on a persona.
2010: Business Management [47]

UMAT: 69 | 56 | 82 | = [69 / 98th Percentile]
2012: MBBS I @ Monash

You could talk about the character development of the protagonist, Anna Frith. She goes from a timid character to one who thrives under the dire circumstances (that is, the plague which cripples the town of Eyam); showing leadership, care/compassion for others - putting others ahead of herself and her own well-being. As for tips, don't write out your whole speech/or what you're going to say on palm cards; rather write down the main points of your talk and only refer to it if you have a mind blank.

You can also talk about the concept of 'people in crises' and how the villagers respond to times of adversity.
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Thanks for the ideas guys!  :)

I think I might talk about Anna's character development then compare that to that of the other characters, specifically their reaction to the plague. Then try to relate it back to a larger idea such as the strength of the human spirit.
Does that sound alright? :/

And also, anyone have any tips on how to construct the oral? Is there a specific format that we get marked on?

Yes, sounds like you're on the right track. In terms of constructing the oral; practice, practice, practice. Practice in front of your parents or your pet or something; to mimic the real thing. I'm doing that for my oral. The main area you may lose marks on is fluency and referring to your palm cards too much (i.e. reading off your cards). Try to avoid that if possible. Though it may depend on your teacher/school in terms of how it is assessed. Another thing I might add is to have a structure speech; that is, your ideas link together succinctly and it is clearly expressed. Good luck!
