Some advice!

Hi everyone,

Im in year 11 this year and doing biol 3/4 and methods 3/4. i like them both and so far its good! BUT i looked ahead at the course for methods and it looks daunting. ive moved into a new school this year, and my old school didn't cover half the topics they should've so everything is sooo new this year.

I was wanting some advice on whether or not I should drop methods, get my basics right, do 1/2 again and repeat 3/4 next year in year 12!?

I wasn't too sure, because I know I will be more stressed next year with the other year 12 subjects but then i also cant afford a low score in methods, just because my 1/2 wasnt strong enough :/

Why not just do 3/4 twice if necessary? Who knows; you might not even need to if you study hard enough now. It's not a particularly intensive subject and you can definitely compensate for what happened last year.

I suggest that you stick with it. Not really worth dropping out and redoing 1/2. I know a few people who have done methods without 1/2 and have gotten 40s, so its definitely achievable.
First thing i would do is either get extra help from your teacher outside of the class and do extra work to strengthen your understanding OR get a tutor which would help you a lot.
Also if you dont do as well as you would like in methods this year, you have the option of repeating it. Which wouldnt be so bad considering that you will still end up with 6 subjects and that you would know the entire course by then. (But obviously this would be your last option)

I remember flipping through the textbook before school started last year and it really did seem quite scary. You get introduced to so many different functions, calculus is new, and the probability really changes compared to what you do in year 9 and 10. But seriously...once you sit down and read it carefully, it's not that difficult to grasp, especially after a few questions. Generally, people who do two 3/4s are pretty good students so you won't find methods conceptually hard at all. Also, I'm sure your teacher would understand that you haven't done 1/2 and would be willing to help you out so make use of that resource. Another thing...I didn't do the 1/2 course (our school doesn't do 1/2s in year 10 unless it's a LOTE) and I don't think I was hindered by that.

Keep the two 3/4's. Then, if you are happy enough with your methods score, you will only have to do 4 next year.
I really regret not doing methods and bio in year 11!!

Continue doing the two. If you're unhappy with your SS, you can always repeat. If you do well, you can cruise through Year 12 focusing on 4 subjects.
