Biol 3,4 in Year 12

Hey Guys,
Im doing Biol 1,2 right now, and it takes a lot of time to study effectively for it. I have heaps of really smart year 10s doing it right now, and am nowhere near the top of my class (around the middle). I am aiming for a 40+ score in biology. I am mildly interested in it, and am not sure as to what I want to become yet. Should I continue with Biology next year (do Biol 3,4 in year 12)? Will it be too much work if I do continue with Biol 3,4 next yar, on top of all my other subjects? Some advice would be really handy, because I have to hand in my subjects when school starts :)

Thanx

Like you said, it's a subject that I reckon gets exponentially harder (and more time-consuming) to study for as your study score aim increases. Well all subjects are actually like this, but biology even more so because there are very few sources which fully explain any concept, and it takes quite alot of googling and multiple textbook scavenging (I had to go through my brother's university bio textbooks at times) to find what you need sometimes. So it really depends how good and how fast you can understand things, because at a ~40 level, you don't need to understand COMPLETELY everything; just an overview of everything I guess. So yeh, you could continue, but it's quite likely choosing another subject could yield a similar mark with a much lower stress and work load - that is, unless you reckon your interest in it will motivate you to study?

Lol, no, biol was interesting, but i dont like it as much as I used to- Unit 2 is not to my taste. :) The thing is though, if I am thinking about dentistry (not sure yet, it sounds like a good job), is biology important? Should I do it just to keep my options open?

Bio isn't even a pre-req for it though...nor does it relate to it much anyway...except for perhaps the nervous system part? Overall it's not going to affect you in terms of entering dent, or even once you get in, its not really going to disadvantage you. My brother did pharmacy and he covered the entire bio unit 3 course within under a term, so yeh, anything you'll need in it will be taught so just choose what you're interested in or what's best for your ENTER.

From memory, unit 2 is vastly different from units 3 and 4, and has a very different focus.
Unit 1 is more relevant to 3/4, thus if you enjoyed unit 1, I'd recommend keeping the subject. Off the top of my head, the only things you learn in unit 2 which are useful for 3/4 is the stuff on the nervous system and meiosis.

Also, considering you want to do dentistry, I'd suggest continuing with it. La Trobe (Bendigo) is the only university which offers undergraduate dentistry, and for the first time, it will be combined with a health science degree (Bachelor of Health Sciences in Dentistry/Master of Dentistry). I'm sure biology would be useful for the course on a basic level, and there would be some transferability of knowledge. The prerequisites for dentistry (La Trobe) are:

Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 40 in English (ESL) or 35 in any other English, and a study score of at least 35 in biology or chemistry.

As Jess said, if it will get you into your prerequisite course, then go for it! ;)

Yeah unit 2 sucks, I'm totally skipping it. Just gonna do the bare minimum to pass and get a head start for units 3 and 4.
