For the first question, I re-arranged the equation into:
$x = \frac{-5}{y-10}$
Is this suitable? I got $\frac{p}{50}$ but I'm not sure if it was by luck.

Anything which is algebraically correct will work. There's plenty of methods to do any question, and your one seems equally correct and accessible so yeh, go for that method if you want.
