...is it normal for teachers to refuse to correct practice exams and to tell students to correct these themselves (using VCAA assessment reports)?

What did you do exactly.

Pretty much all teachers will be happy to help you if you have attempted an exam, marked it and still don't understand a question or two from the given answers. (or three or four)

Well, it depends. While getting someone to look over your work and pointing out areas of improvement is very important. Marking your own stuff is useful to, I guess it depends how subjective the subject is. Like for accounting, maths and perhaps physics, marking yourself isn't bad at all.

However for English etc, marking yourself is rather difficult.

thats bullshit.
they should be giving you feedback on your essays, especially when the exam is only a few days away.

I'm guessing you're referring to English.
I think for essays, the teachers should agree to correct SOME practice essays as they can be quite time consuming.
With maths, I think the student will be able to correct them by themselves.

well it probably depends on the teacher
my friend who goes to macrob said that it is only compulsory for their english teachers to mark three practice essays so if they dont want to mark more they dont have to

No body in my school ever really does much pre-exam practice so my teachers don't really mind.
