WOOT exams are over!

global phenomena

kinda hard for me to do something specific cos there are many different ones (i did desertification last year)

your map, this will be on the exam, you get 1 mark for boltss, 1 mark for precision and usually 1 mark where the question asks you to name a location on the map. These marks are really easy to get, know your map. Note that if you forget one part (such as a title) in boltss you lose the mark.

Factors that lead to your global phenomenon. Think SHEEPT and think about the "relative importance" which is on the study design. What is the most contributing factor to your global phenomenon and why, how is it more important than say another factor. Can you quantify (e.g. 70% of desertification is thought to be caused by social factors)

Positive and Negative Impacts on people and environment. think about how your phenomenon changes the way people live and the landscape, are these impacts positive or negative. Make sure you can identify both positive and negative impacts because there are always some of both. This is the beginning of the flow on effect i like talking about and what examiners love to do. They get you to list an impact on people or a place and then get you to talk about a response aimed at managing this impact. Theres a lot of stuff to know in geography so when you are structuring your notes, think about an impact and a subsequent response. This will help in the exam as you wont need to memorise as much.

Responses- It is a "global phenomenon" YOU NEED A GLOBAL RESPONSE e.g. for desertification you might choose the international year of desertification to raise awareness of the problem. (if i havent mentioned this it also applies to population)

National/Regional responses- know one and know it well, this is what you will most likely be talking about in the exam.

Local response- since its a global phenomenon and affects a large part of the globe inevitable it has an impact at a local scale, make sure you can name a town/village/suburb etc.. where your response is happening, it will give you an extra edge.

Remember a policy is an overall goal or statement- e.g. To improve the health and wellbeing of people in kenya

A strategy is how you will carry out your policy, its much more specific e.g. through the use of family planning and contraceptives.

GOOD LUCK for the exam, i hope you all do well

Ben
