is it more difficult to get into a post-grad course at a different uni (eg: melb uni) from which you did your undergrad (eg: monash)? bias?

Why would parents cringe at their child becoming a teacher? It's not a bad profession.
@appian way= i DID NOT say teachers are dumb (in relation to the -ve karma) please copy/paste where I said that.

I never said you did. My justification for the negative karma was that I know lots of teachers who are highly intelligent who would take offense at the statement that teaching isn't a respected profession. I know of teachers who've achieved perfect scores (either in individual subjects or as ENTERs) in their VCE and HSC, and they entered teaching to make a difference. As far as I know, their parents were pleased with their decision. Teachers have long been considered respectable and knowledgeable members of the community, and I think to infer that their pursuits have limited success and influence (and hence causing teaching qualifications to be viewed in a negative light) is just insulting.

Back on topic - I wouldn't choose BBiomed unless I was confident that I wanted to go on and complete a MD or equivalent post graduate qualification. I'd rather undertake the BSci to keep my options open and study different sciences. But that's just me - I'm leaning towards raw science at the moment anyway.

No, you just make sure you meet prerequisites for the course

Yeah, also it is VERY competitive. I am also looking at doing Postgraduate but I will not be doing it at my original Uni, but transfer to another. I went to a open day thing, and they said from what I remember they have a very large pool of students, so you are not guaranteed a place even if you meet the prerequisites, therefore I presume they MIGHT favour those who are from their Uni. That's just my opinion, and I cannot base it on anything, like if I was melb Uni, I would prefer to see my students do post-grad, not another's, but yeah. Unfortunately I am not a brick complex.

I am sure if you do well, you will be accepted, besides doesn't Monash offer post-grad if all else fails?

Once you've met the prerequisites, you will be selected for Grad Med with GPA (uni grades), GAMSAT score, and interview. So it doesn't really matter which uni you come from, or which course you do. All it comes down to is a competitive GPA (E.g. minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 to be considered, but you will most likely need 6.5/7.0), as well as GAMSAT. Monash does offer grad Med, but I think their campus is in Gippsland for this and might have to move there if you get in  :-\

There is also Deakin uni, which has just opened a brand new medical school, although I'm pretty sure their campus is in Geelong. If you really want to do Med, there are 12 graduate medical schools in Australia to choose from.

hey iamdan08 or anyone who does biomed, how much more difficult is Calculus 1 (or whatever the uni maths in biomed is called) from maths methods? are they similar but calculus 1 is just a step above the concepts? sorry to be a bit off topic, just wondering as i'd love to do biomed but the thought of continuing maths is slightly disconcerting.

To put it simply calculus 1 is simply "spec-in-a-semester"!! My mate did calculus 2, and he said everything in the calculus 1 course is covered in specialist maths. My mate didn't think it was a step above at all, if anything, a little below.

I had the same concern about doing maths again, however i actually found it enjoyable, and better than Methods.

No maths isn't a prerequisite for graduate entry medicine. In Biomedicine I think It is more taken to give you a solid grounding for when you do the subject Experimental design and Data analysis in second semester.

hmm i see thanks. spec-in-a-semester, sounds a bit scary haha. hopefully it won't be too hard. so are you finding it difficult? did you find methods even difficult?

i didn't think the experimental design subject was really maths based nor relating to calculus in anyway :S i thought it was more simple statistics and such... what sort of things do you do in that subject??

btw, for your biomed subjects, are you getting a set of lecture notes for each? or are you required to create your own?

Na it isn't too hard at all. I found methods initially difficult, but towards the end of the year i found it alright.

Experimental design is pretty maths based, in fact most of it is maths. It's alright...i guess, i find the lectures pretty ordinary though.

For my biomed subjects we get given lecture slides which contain the basic content of what is talked about in the lectures, then you just add your own notes to them as well. Some lecturers deliberately leave blank spaces where you fill in missing information.

at d0minicz: Yeah i think it is a pretty good option. I had it as my second preference.

ahh awesome, that's good then. i'm sure if some study it won't be too bad anyways:)
hmm i was looking at the course outline for the experimental design and it seems like some of the stuff we do in research methods in psych hah. not so interestng.lol
yay, i like the idea of getting lecture notes - nice structure, better then in school where you are forced to make your own.
thanks for answering:)
