Regarding "recent posts" box

Is it possible to add in a function that allows the user to only view the recent posts from the sub-forums they choose?

I like to keep track of a few sub-forums of interest by getting a quick glance at what's new but I often see:

Re: __________________ by _________ (Other General Discussion)

So I guess this isn't a viable option (no such plug-in? Not sure how a feature is meant to be implemented ) 'Tis a shame.
