I've found that scaling of scores does happen if the overall performance on a particular subject is quite low. For example, I got 81 for Electromagnetism and Special Rel this semester (I'm doing Chem Eng/Science @ UoM) despite doing quite poorly on the exam itself. For the most part though, i have gotten what I deserved in my opinion in my two years at uni.
