physio alternate pathways?
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:43:02 pm »
hey guys.
i wanted to do physiotherapy next year at latrobe, but i screwed up my vce and only got 90.05, when i needed 95, or at least 91 to get into charles sturt uni physio.
i was wondering whether you guys knew of any alternate pathways into physio?
the ones i know right now are either do science at melb uni through the new generation melbourne courses, and then do postgrad physio. but the thing is with that, if i dont do well enough in science and i cant get accepted into postgrad physio, then im a bit screwed.
i also know of doing any health science course at latrobe, because all of their health sciences have to same first year, and trying to transfer into physio after the first year. but im pretty sure you have to do like super well in your first year, so that pathway might be a bit of a gamble.
just hoping anybody knows of any other more.. lets say 'secure' pathways?
thanks,
chris

I am in the sam boat as you, i wanna do med post grad.

Science seems like the best option and you dont necesarily have to get into post grad melbourne. You can aply anywhere in victoria like deaking, latrobe (i guess thats safer because those UNIs arent as highly regarded) hence less competitive.

As for failure of doing badly, well, i cant do anything about that, you will have to lift your game.

hmm yeh i know i need to lift my game. how do i know what courses make me eligible for physio as a postgrad?
like i know you need to do human anatomy and human physiology subjects as an undergrad course, but what courses make me eligible for this? would i be able to do a bachelor of exercise and sport science at deakin and be able to do postgrad physio as this course has human structure and function, and functional human anatomy? or can i do any health science at latrobe and do postgrad physio as long as it has those human anatomy and human physiology subjects in the course as prerequisites?

As a disclaimer: I don't really know very much about these kinds of degrees. But anyway...

Doing health science at latrobe and then transfering after a year, especially if the subjects are all the same, is a good option. Usually to transfer you need about a distinction average, which, if you enjoy what you're doing, wouldn't be too difficult.

I don't think there really are any 'secure' pathways, because there's always the chance that you'll be denied to get into the course you want, but within-uni transfers are usually more 'secure' than transferring to another uni (although transferring from melbourne to latrobe would be fairly easy, I think).

Completing a science degree and then doing postgrad physio is also a good option. A general science degree from Melbourne is well regarded throughout the country and you should be able to go somewhere with it. It's also a good back up to have if you don't get into physiotherapy.

Your ENTER isn't far off from the Chales Sturt cut-off, so there's still probably some hope of getting into that course as well.

This is a choice you'll have to make yourself, but I think it depends on when you want to start studying physiotherapy. If you're fine about waiting to postgrad, then maybe going to Melbourne uni is a good idea, if you'd like to get into it straight away, then health science is the better option. Either way, you're going to have to work quite hard to get good results to make it easier on yourself to get into physiotherapy, but it's not as though you go to uni to do badly anyway.

yeh, i'll still have charles sturt as one of my top options, but with latrobe health sciences, its that there are limited opportunities for transfer i think?
well at latrobe, there is a common first year of health sciences, for all health science courses which is why you can transfer, but i think a lot of other ppl will be thinking the same thing as me in that sense, so it might be pretty competitive? id rather get into it straight away, but there are many more reasons i think for me to not do health sciences at latrobe because of the low chances of actually getting the transfer.
