The reason for it is this:

First borns get more parental attention during their earlier years
Whilst subsequent babies get only partial parental attention during their earlier because the parents also have to take care of the first born.

  Having said that, children with older [especially much older siblings] might have an advantage as the older ones spend time with them and set high standards

I think also that space between children would affect it. Like, if the youngest was born 10 years after the last child or if two children were born within the same couple of years.

I actually never considered my own case. I am smarter than my older sister (in a purely academical way), which goes against my (guess) vote.

Surely there's little correlation. Most cases I can think of (myself included) don't fit that proposed pattern.

meh, both my siblings are still pretty smart too - my older sister got straight HDs last semester at uni.
