arts/law vs comm/law with diploma of language
« on: December 21, 2008, 01:56:42 pm »
Is it possible to do a diploma of language (ie. Chinese) while doing comm/law @ deakin (or any uni for that matter). I'm quite set on doing Chinese at uni, but I also want a commerce degree. I also heard that a diploma of Chinese is virtually the same as a Chinese major in an arts degree, true or false?

PS. Gran Torino is a really good movie

when i went to the deakin open day they told me that you can take electives from outside the faculty (commerce in your case) that your degree is from.
but check that deakin offers chinese. or call them today, they're hotline is open til 5pm. the number is 1800 242 251.

Yes, a diploma of modern languages is the equivalent of a language major in an arts degree.

so if you qualify and successfully graduate a diploma of languages while completing a degree, would your job perspectives increase if you are to look for jobs overseas?

sweet! hopefully i'll take up either french or arabic. Yer arabic sounds a bit random but i guess it's used widely across the globe and since i want to venture off to Dubai drilling oil, then i guess i'll need arabic.

A diploma of modern languages doesn't make you fluent or anything, but you should be able to speak your chosen language quite well, and you'll therefore increase your job opportunities overseas (and, as akkxn said, most likely in Australia as well).

I really want to continue on with Italian at university. But depending on the course I do (I'm thinking Business) I may not be able to study the language. I think I can only do it through an Arts course???
btw, sorry to totally hijack your thread :S

You can do commerce at Melbourne and take a language as your breadth subject

I was thinking more along the lines or Business management, or HR. Haven't really looked into commerce that much

Or you can do Commerce and have an additional Diploma of Modern Languages. It puts an extra year on your degree, but you get an extra qualification.
