classes(monash)
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:12:41 pm »
for one of my units it says '3 hours of laboratory/practice classes'. Is laboratory the same as practice class? ie 3 hours in total?

also in MUTTS it has 'support class', what exactly is that, is it same as practice class?
I will be tutoring Specialist/Methods in 2009. PM me if interested!

It should be referring to a single 3 hour class I would assume (I am making the assumption you are doing either sci or eng based on your subjects)

Log into allocate, rather than use the mutts thing

allocate+ is way easier to use. MUTTs is confusing.

I've recommended to other people to make a makeshift timetable on word of excel and as you go along allocating your timetable preferences, chuck your no.1 preferences in your makeshift timetable so you can visualise what your classes would be. That way you can also muck around and try avoid the high capacity classes where you might end up being screwed over.

If there are only a few lectures to choose from , and heaps of tutes to choose from, I'd recommend allocating your lectures first and working around these.

I have always gotten my first preference, even if the class is >200% full. No point in avoiding them =P

Yes but if a class is like 50% full (and you strategically choose low capacity classes as your number 1 preference) you greatly increase your chances of obtaining your number 1 preferred timetable (where you have compromised a little in order to increase your chances).

Also costa, wait a few weeks and they'll all be hovering around full level (asides from like monday 8am tute, for some reason those are never popular)

They *are* capable of shoving more than 20 people in a tute if need be

Lol yeh but what I mean by this is that either way my timetable is excellent. I couldn't really ask for a better one. It's just the fact that I have strategically chosen classes that
1. I am happy with
2. Are not close to full capacity.

Obviously this is easier for me because I only have 12 hours to allocate. Whereas for someone doing say 23 hours, you may not have the same luxury as me in playing around with your timetable and getting 3 brilliant days allocated and high chances of getting that.

My days are Monday 12pm-4pm (30 min break) , Tuesday 12-pm-4pm , Thursdays 11am-3.30pm*

*pending on the outcome of the allocate+ system

Lol yeh :P
Every day I keep going back and seeing how high they are creeping up :P They are really low though... like 15% full while most others are already quite full.

But yes thanks! I'll keep an eye out and more than likely theyll all get close to full.

i usually well i think you usually get first preference most of the timeunless there is a clash. everyone has equal chance of getting their preferences so its all fair lolz anyway lectures dont really matter because if there is another lecture of the same unit u can just go to that one

Question: In second semester, all my lectures are automatically allocated it says (there is only 1 lecture time instead of the 2) :(
More than likely this is because most people do 4/6 core subjects in sem 1, leaving only 2 cores left in sem 2 for everyone and the probability of there being 1 out of the 6 units still requiring 2 lectures is slim.

Is there any chance that this may change? Or will all the auto allocations for sem2 stay the same?

2 Questions;

1) How do we know what contact hours we have to do?

2) With Allocate, I have clashes? Would this be right - ie the lectures are auto-allocated, but the tutorials run on the same day but at the same time or half way through the lecture?

1) In Allocate+ it tells you how long each class runs for. Just add those hours up :)

2) If the lecture is auto-allocated you have to go to that. Usually there are more than time options for tutorials though, so you'll have to choose another one. It's not advisable to miss tutorials. Lectures you can get away with but a lot of tutorials mark attendance / make up part of your mark.
If both the lecture and tutorial is auto-allocated i.e. you have no other options then you'll have to speak to your lecturer / tutor to organise something re: missing class
