These are the options

The only one I'd be seriously worried about is the Recycle Bin. Just make sure nothing you might need again is in there.

The other stuff, particularly the hibernation file, you can safely clean. Web performance may be a tad slower for a bit as it re-caches web files, but there will almost certainly be a lot of junk from websites you don't visit anymore in there.

Defragmentation
Cleaning up the registry (this one's apparently a bit risky but I've been doing it for a year now and nothing's exploded yet)
Turn off the pretty effects if you have Vista

Turn off the pretty effects if you have Vista

Better phrased as, 'Delete Vista if you have Vista'. Well, if your PC is having performance issues at least.

Pretty effects on vista = sidebar

For cleaning up the registry I use WinASO Registry Optimizer.
There's also a program I have called Auslogics Boostspeed which is really good - it cleans up files and defragments for you (but don't use its registry cleaning feature).

That program also has a whole bunch of options for turning off special effects which slow down the computer e.g.:

Will I have any problems using a registry cleaner such as Ccleaner?

Will it make my computer explode?

Also, is it strange for my free space to be decreasing when I do a defrag?

You shouldn't. WinASO has been shown to be safe for Vista. Don't know about Ccleaner though.

No, mine hasn't yet and it's been a year :P

Don't know :S mine always increases a little
