Hmm, I think that it's definitely too early in his reign to crown him with this prize. Lots of people have speculated that it's to ensure that greater respect of him is commanded in the international community (hence aiding him to make progress on some core issues), but I don't think it's possible to make a judgement about what he's done until he's had a larger amount of time to cement his polices and bring forward more tangible change.

Ahhh...NO

no offence but that's completely wrong. Don't just take one token round and judge like that. They take ages deciding who gets ANY prize. Gandhi, in his entire life, never got the peace prize. The year he died they gave no prize (possibly because they were going to give it to him that year).

AND, they decide who gets it almost a year before its actually announced. So, atleast for Obama, it is sorta disturbing that he's being awarded it.

But compared to Science/Physics/Medical prizes, which I believe are given 20 years or so after their achievements, Nobel Peace Prizes seem to be given quite early, and in Obama's case, pre-results.

I think the Peace Prize acts partially as a safeguard against Obama taking a war-like stance in the future. It would look really politically incorrect for a Peace Prize recipient to declare war on any country. It could also be a reward to the voters who voted against the war-mongering Republicans; a sign that the USA, the 'leader of the free world' might finally be stepping in the right direction.

Hmm, that's a really good point. Although the announcement of the award apparently occured on the eve of him stating that there'd be an increase of troops in Afghanistan.
