My Dad got his Garmin really cheap @ JB Hi-Fi.
He and his then-partner both went in together and bought two (one for each of them), hence the heavy discounting.

Works a treat too... despite the fact that it's a few years old now, we still get to update it all the time with new roads and such.
It warns us about fixed speed cameras as well.

The only criticism for them that I have is that there didn't seem to be particularly good coverage in Tasmania - it kept dropping out and wanting to know if we'd travelled hundreds of miles since we'd last turned it on. -.-"

Eh... it's near-impossible to get yourself lost in Tasmania anywayz... unbelievably beautiful, but oh-so-very tiny.

Yeah, whatever you do, don't get a Navman.  Bought one for my dad, it's a stinking piece of shit.  Touch screen doesn't respond, safety camera warnings come on in map mode, but not in navigation mode.  And all day the bloody 40km/h school zone warnings come on, instead of only between 8-9.30 and 3-4.30 or whenever it is they actually apply.

I know, on everything technology, we get shafted in Aus!

Another thought for people with iPhones, there is the TomTom app which gives your device full GPS fuctionality.  It is $99.95, or you can Jailbreak your phone and get it free.  I looks very good from what I've seen of it, and the iPhone touch screen is a million times more responsive than any GPS screen that you will ever find.

Holy crap this is cheap.  I paid $189 for a shit piece 3.5" Navman.  :(
