What does it mean to "...charge laptop battery for three cycles at first"?

Not quite sure how you'd achieve that without using the battery, but it effectively means that you should ensure that you do 3 complete charge-discharge cycles on the battery. In other words:

- it was probably supplied uncharged

therefore:

- charge it to full before turning it on
- turning the computer on and letting the battery run dry
- rinse and repeat

Ah right.  Thanks.  But would you recommend that for most new lithium battery laptops?

Sounds a bit excessive. Just turn it on, waste the little bit of battery that was left then charge it for 12 hours.

Make sure you get at least one cycle in. It really does help the battery life.

One cycle is good enough for most applications, three is for pedants (and to cover their arses, really).
