It's like when you've been accused of something and you need to give a statement to show that you did not commit the crime.

In this case, it was a Facebook status update that saved his life.

It was evidence that he wasn't at the scene of the crime when it was being commited.

Usually alibis aren't given in the form of a facebook status update so that's why it's on the news.

Because he was updating his status at the time the crime was being committed, it was impossible that he was involved.  That's why he was freed.
