McDonald's

At the conclusion of year 12, I think it's a great time to find part time or casual work.  As soon as my last exam finished, I started handing in my resume to various retail stores at a shopping centre.  I've also applied at Coles and Woolworths.  Unfortunately, up until this point, I've been given the "cold shoulder" and by now, the fact is that most stores would have finished hiring by now.  So I decided to follow Fyrefly's advice:

Beggars can't be choosers.
You want a job, apply everywhere and see who will have you.

So now, I've got no choice but to try McDonald's, KFC, etc.  Is anyone else in my situation or was I a little too late with the "rush" this year?  Has anyone worked at McDonald's or a similar environment?

Ur going to hate my advice.

BUT DO NOT APPLY THERE

Look man, I know some money is good, but can u see urself working there for ages till u get anotehr job?

In regards to safeway and coles, make sure u put ur avilbilty like EVERYDAY, and for like 9 hours+ (trust me they do not give u 9+hours for 7 days a week), but in doing so u sort of "cheat" to skip the que, when i went to my interview at safeway they GAVE me my times, like 2-3 shifts a week, even though i said im availabe 7 days LOL

Hungry jacks, kfc etc, pays LESS than safeway but has MORE work....cooking, cleaning, registers, safety, hygeine, etc. And its so stresssful, u gotta be fast etc

I don't know man, u at least applied everywhere, and haven't heard back....not many choices except the fast food outlets

If it's any help I got a job at safeway with no previous work experience.

Just dress nice to the interviews and give them answers they want to hear.

DO NOT APPLY THERE

I worked at KFC for a while, and...ughhh. Yeah sure I was getting money, but I hated it. There was just way too much work, and everyone wanted things now now now, and you had to smile and act fake around the customers and shit... Like they had this procedure and checklist you had to go through when talking to customers: smile, ask how they are, ask for their order, ask if they want an upsize....blah blah blah. And managers crack it if you don't do it bc if you do it and one of those secret shoppers comes in to evaluate the store and you do the procedure properly, they get bonuses for the store. Yeah that's right, THEY get bonuses, NOT you. Also I never found I had time to just chill a bit. I was always made to do SOMETHING, even if it was pointless... So I always came home really tired. Plus, it was very greasy, and greasy = coming home smelling greasy. Not pleasant.

Keep applying everywhere OTHER THAN fast food stores. Lol.
When I get sad, I stop being sad, and be AWESOME instead. True story.

I've applied for various Woolworths stores only to be rejected 1-2 weeks later every time.  I put my availability everyday but with still no avail.  I've submitted both a cover letter and a resume each time.  Maybe each time I applied, there were people who had previous retail experience.

Coles, on the other hand, I'm still waiting for a response and I've heard from friends that that it could take a few months.

I'm on desperate mode and I've pretty much got no choice.  McDonald's at least looks better than just year 10 work experience on my resume.

I guess I just missed the boat this time around.

look beyond these shitty chains.

I have.  Tried small retail outlets and other various small businesses if they need anyone even if it's a Christmas casual but like I said, no luck.

But even with Macca's I'm not in it for the money.  Just need something to do and some experience to give my career a head start.  There's nothing worse than being 19+ with no experience because it'd just get even more difficult to get a job.  Also, at that time, the chance of even getting a job at Macca's would almost be impossible because I heard the older you are from 16, the harder it is to find part time/casuals at fast food chains.

So for now, anything will suffice.  Start at Macca's and then move on from there because everyone has to start somewhere.  :)

Do they smell like mint mixed with ammonia?
