Actually I have a partially relevant anecdote. In year 8 I qualified for MHS and had to choose between MHS and my current school. "My heart" chose MGS because at MGS we use laptops all the time in Y9 and 10. And...I wanted to play games in class :). I couldn't bear the idea of having to write down everything on paper at that time. Finances wasn't really an issue because either way the fee would be approximately the same.

Do I regret my decision? Well my initial reason for choosing MGS over MHS isn't valid anymore because now in Y11 - I practically never bring my laptop to school. But I don't really regret my decision. I believe that I will have achieved the same results either way. And I like MGS anyway.

So in my case listening to my heart has worked out good
wow brave choice. but fees arent the same lol MGS = 20,000 ish MHS = 2000

Can I ask if u dont mind

Why did ur heart say "x" and ur head say "y"

And do u regret it? Feel that u missed out.....or that Melb. wasn't what u thoguht it would be?

My heart said Melbourne, due mainly to its prestige and asian parents!
Also in my thoughts and from what others said, Melbourne was the uni more renowned for the Commerce discipline.

Head said Monash, mainly due to the option of a double degree, allowing me to do 3 majors.
No need to do breadth subjects was another key.
And...yes....the money did play into my head also. Most of my high school friends were also going there too.

I've never regretted choosing Melbourne and am very happy with the choice too. If I was going to go Monash, I would have done a BCom/Eco double degree, which I would by now, dropped the Economics part, as I now intend to major in Accounting & Finance.

Breadth subjects weren't as bad as I thought. Probably because I chose all the Maths subjects, which I've always done alright in high school. Hahaha!

And in regards to the money, I did question myself for a few months, but a month into uni, I received an email from UoM scholarships office, and that could be said as the happiest day in my life! =D

So you could say following my heart, has been the right choice so far...
2008 ENTER = 97.90

BCom @ UoM - I love you Melbourne!

One time I was in this High School musical production and also in basketball club for APS sports.

And I had to choose between going to the basketball game or the musical production. My head said the game while my heart sed the song.

I ended up going with my heart.

But I honestly wish I didnt choose either though.

I find that I use my heart to make these decisions. On the open days I went to both Melbourne and Monash and I got a sense that I would enjoy Melbourne more than Monash. I chose my heart, since logically both were the right decision given the known information at the time. Basically logic didn't bring me to one logical choice, but, two.

Another huge decision I had to make was choosing between engineering and mathematical physics. Logically engineering was a good choice in terms of: money, jobs, etc, whilst, my heart said mathematical physics, where, there isn't as many jobs (someone prove me wrong) as for salary I'm not sure about facts on that. Basically I knew that studying physics and maths were really fun, whilst engineering felt like a chore. So I was pretty sure I would struggle to do well in engineering opposed to probably getting good marks in mathematical physics.

In the end I went with my heart and I don't feel any regret over it. I really love Melbourne uni and I'm really looking forward to my subjects next year.

He's on a freaking massive scholarship.

Anywho, I practically always follow my heart.  My head told me that if I did Physics, I could probably score pretty well based on my proficiency in maths, in spite of my general distaste for Science.  My heart told me to do Philosophy and be freaking awesome.  I did Philosophy and it's my 2nd favourite subject (tied with English, and right behind Literature!).

Moral of the story: Follow your heart and you will be freaking awesome.

^and also thats a good example, because people or parents may go "Oh, u choose 'philosophy' over physics'" if u get what I mean?

Oh, thanks for that, thats a good example

So at the beginning of this year I was planning on doing Psych 1/2 so I wouldn't have to do Further and I've come across like 3/4 of the Psych course before. Anyway, I was going to drop it at the end of the year in order to do Spesh.

Now not only am I continuing Psych next year, I'm applying to do UMEP Psych which means dropping Physics and not doing Spesh because that clashes with Psych. :/ :/

Pretty much my heart was screaming, 'bahh you don't want to do even more electricity/motion next year' while my head was going ,'asfajkhdsfgsd you idiot physics scales up and it's easier than chem and so does spesh omg what are you doing'.

Yeah, I have no idea if this even has a chance of working out good, but we'll see next year.

Yr10 i was really into being a chemist (not pharmacist) so i picked the subject accordingly.

I needed one subject to fill in the empty slot in my subject selection sheet and some of my mates were doing bio and geography, i just randomly filled in bio.

It was a happy accident, because now i <3 bio, it probably my favourite/2nd favourite subject. A lot of my other subjects are a drag and i hate them....chemistry too... i only liked it cause i had a half decent teacher... and he's gone. Don't want be a chemist anymore but i still have to stick with it even if i dont like it because im considering medicine.

back in the first week of year 10 when i first got moved up which was like 5 months into year 10 i wanted to do a unit 1/2. my teachers were adamant i would not handle the pressure since i had 5 months of work to catch up on while still knowing what the rest of year 9 would've taught. But my heart said no do 1 unit 1/2 so i wanted to chose legal studies and it took me 1 month to get it. So but the time i got into legal it was half the year. I believe that if hadn't of done legal in year 11 it would never have crossed my mind to do it in year 12 and my results may have been considerably different. :D

Oh, I have a similar story to you! I was trying to get into medicine and because my UMAT was shit, I needed a really really high ENTER. In year 12 I had the choice between specialist maths, and international studies, because they clashed and the maths department wouldn't allow me to do spesh by correspondence.

Head [read: posh English accent]: It is of more benefit to you to do Specialist Mathematics. It will contribute wonderfully to your ENTER, thereby dramatically increasing your chances of being accepted into Medical School.
Heart: dude, international studies is way more interesting, mannnn

I followed my heart. I'm not 100% sure it was the best thing to do?
  • I didn't get into med as my ENTER couldn't make up for my UMAT/horrible Monash interview, but that meant I could start learning French in arts.
  • Also, if I hadn't done int I wouldn't have realised that I have such an interest in this area
  • But law is a pain in the arse a lot of the time and I'm not guaranteed a job because it's a bloody competitive industry... unlike med... doctors are always in demand...
  • But I don't have to stay at uni for a billion years to specialise / suffer chronic sleep deprivation as a medical intern / etc.
  • But I've had to give up one of my dreams to work with Medecins sans Frontiers

Hmm...

Listening to your heart and listening to your head are two different things.

My heart was set on UoM.
My head told me Monash was the better choice.

Very rarely am I guided by my head instead of my heart, but I regret nothing about my decision.

Besides, putting up with me is fun isn't it? :P
