Netbooks between $300 and $500

Hey guys,

I'm planning on buying a netbook to take with me to uni, since the laptop I own now is too heavy to carry to uni. All I'll need it for is to do assignments and surf the net (though my phone can surf the net). Also since netbooks don't have an optical drive, how fo you put Microsoft office on it.

My budget is preferably between $300 and $500.

Thanks,

QuantumJG,

I edited my budget.

$393 - Might want to read some reviews on that model, though. I haven't looked into it too much but yeah, I think the price is pretty good.

That's the netbook I'm going for.

What does CS mean? Computer Science? If it is then that's good because any field of science requires a good knowledge of computing (especially for physics and applied maths).

Also a MSc degree at MIT, cool.

I'm aiming to do a MSc(Physics) or MSc(Maths) in 2012, just at UoM.

Yep, CS is computer science.

And yeah, I wish to go to MIT but I haven't looked into it much. Just keeping it in my signature as sort of a reminder to myself :D
But I'm the sort of person that sets huge goals for themselves and never attempt to accomplish them... haha. I'll see how I go.

QuantumJG,

Regarding MS Office, if you already have the CD, then you simply copy the CD onto USB on another computer, then put the USB into your netbook and install off of that.  If you wan't to buy it, then the same process applies.  If you don't want to buy it then PM me, and I can direct you to where you can obtain a "free" copy. :P

I have an eee pc and I would recommend it - it's REALLY light and does all the basic stuff really well. And has like 7 hours battery life which is really handy if you have a long day of lectures and cbf bringing the charger to uni :P

I don't think mine came with Microsoft Office. I just made a CD image of the copy I had and mounted it with Daemon. No CD drive is kinda annoying though.

Thanks guys.

I'll just put office on a USB. As for the asus eee pc, I was looking at getting that, but it pushed my budget.

I guess not having an optical drive is annoying, yet I really only need it for typed assignments and checking emails. The cut down version of windows 7 is great too as you aren't wasting RAM on asthetics.

Ok, that sounds good.

I guess mine for $393 is a good buy though.

Just install Open Office for free instead of Microsoft Office. I prefer Microsoft Office personally, but not by that much. Besides, Open Office saves money, works great (albeit a little slow to start up) and is fully compatible with other similar programs on Mac and Windows.
