Facebook racist drama linked to Melbourne's top schools

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/top-schools-linked-to-racist-social-page/story-e6frf7jo-1225815588833

Quote from: Herald Sun
MORE than a dozen of Melbourne's elite schools are embroiled in a race hate scandal as many of their students join a Facebook group calling for immigrants to get out of Australia.

The group's page - which features a picture of the Australian flag with the words "F--- off we're full" written across it, tells non-English speakers "if you wanna speak your crappy language, go back to were (sic) you came from".

The Facebook group is called "Mate speak english, you're in australia now" and has more than 5000 members from across the nation
...
The group includes students from Scotch College, Melbourne Grammar, Geelong Grammar, Trinity Grammar, Lauriston, Mentone Grammar, Ivanhoe Grammar, Camberwell Grammar, and Haileybury as well as a number of government schools.

Oh, Australia.
(Not part of the group, by the way - I only heard about this when a school friend linked me to it. Unfortunately, I went to one of the mentioned schools. Oh, and I'm not a white-Australian, either.)

What does VN think of this? Is racism a growing issue in Australia?

ive seen it before...probably coz sum of my friends joined it :S.
But yeah i would like to see all of those people go to another country (where people do not speak English) with their friends and learn to speak the local language rather than their prefered language! I feel it is really bad that people who joined that group (and the many others who i have no doubt share the same view) feel that if you are in Australia you do not have the right to speak another language.

I would have to say that racism has become more prominent at the moment. Especially with the news (especially all over 2009) that Indians do not feel safe in Australia.

Not only is this behaviour racist, but it's making Australia look very tacky with people saying 'F--- off, we're full' and the other stuff. This kind of behaviour will affect the way the world looks at us.

I completely agree with kyzoo on this. I go to a fairly expensive private school in the inner eastern suburbs and have to say that although there are a few who may be a touch racist, the majority of students are extremely tolerant and generous. :)

Hardly something that's news worthy...

I go to a private catholic school (on the cheaper side) and we got some serious racial issues. We only have 2 asians and they are the butt of most jokes, one plays piano all day by himself whilst the other tries his hardest to integrate.

I said these kids, wasn't trying to imply all private school kids are racists or something.
