Work/life/study balance??

How much do you work a week?
How much do you study a week + how many subjects do you do?
How often do you go out with friends etc.?

Just interested in what you guys spend your time on... am wondering whether I've taken on too much or I just suck at time management

Recently I have been doing a lot of work because exams are coming up, besides the 2 days of uni, the other 5 days of the week I would wake late (4-5pm?) and study all day until early into the morning (6-7 am?), between these I would sometimes procrastinate by chatting on msn, phone, and a bit of videos on youtube.

My avg uni day is about 9-12. After that i hang out for about 1 hour at uni with friends. Then i go home and chill out for a bit, then start studying at 5 odd, and get about 2 hours done every night.

I know, its terrible, with 9-12 i can get 6-7 hrs done in a day, but just lack the motivation. I suck :P

During weekends i get about 4 hrs done.

Don't work anymore during university, but I 'study' maybe 4-5 hours a day. Most of my study isn't really study though; it's either preparing material for tutes (majority of the work I have to do) or assignments. Actual study for exams tends to be crammed at the end. The other reason why it's not really study is because I'm on Facebook and MSN permanently so that's fairly distracting. So yes, I do kind of suck at time management but meh, it's hard to balance my social and academic life otherwise. I pretty much leave at least 1 night a week to go out, sometimes 2, and one weekend.

I work...
6:45 - 9:30 Tues @ uni
9-5:30 Wed + 3 hours transport
9-5:30 Fri + 3 hours transport

Go out once or twice each week

Only doing 3 subjects at uni because I couldn't handle 4, which = only 14 contact hours a week, and still struggling to keep up

Bad time management or just too much?? How do you people stay motivated/on top of things?? I'm pretty much in a permanent state of exhaustion ._.

I had a terrible timetable last year where I was doing overloading and did 5 subjects which equated 15 contact hours but I had it over 5 days which sucked, and I was working 16-20 hours then as well, I felt like I wasn't fully on top of things but still managed my best results that semester.

22 contact hours a week (Engineering),
Study about 3 hours a night,
I work between 15-25 hours a week,
Volunteer 5 hours every second Sunday and 2 hours every other Sunday,
Also doing some work with Melb Uni LIVE team, last major thing was the Community Volunteer Fair.
Plus a bunch of extra-currics

I go out a bit but generally it's just dinner/coffee with friends/gf

Bonus is I don't have to travel much as I live about 10 mins from Uni.

Ever tried. Ever Failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

*Hi-5 for three subjects*

I used to do bout 20 hours of work each week plus volunteering, but I felt I was burning out and struggling a bit.
This year I've backed it off... I generally do 10-15 hours a week.
I have terrible travel times like you - 1-1.5 hours each way for uni (depending on traffic).
I do stuff with Jap club for a couple of hours every week - good practice speaking with Jap natives, but mostly for fun.
Otherwise, I probably go out once every 2 or 3 weeks (clubbing, parties, movies, etc).

Even though I'm working less hours, I'm still struggling this semester because I spent so much time unwell (like... since Easter until just a few weeks ago).
I don't think I'm going to be ready in time for exams... sooo much to try and learn in a very short time, and I don't think I'm capable of it.

I do think you're working too many hours Nina... coming from someone who only does 75% study-load as well, I think it's too much.
You have to keep in mind that 3 subjects is still as hard as 4... just that you don't have to spread yourself as thinly in your study.
I mean, by doing 3 subjects instead of 4, you only gain about 10 hours a week in study you don't have to do -  but you're working 25 hours a week, and Monash recommends only about 8 to 10 hours for full-timers.

It's a common misconception I've found when I've told people about my study load... people think doing 3 subjects instead of 4 somehow makes uni 'easy'... I find it a little insulting, tbh... I find myself having to justify it to people: "Oh, but I have long travel times and two part-time jobs". You get all these internashs living on-campus who do nothing but study 24/7 coz they're shit scared of failing and disappointing their parents, and they don't understand just how much time work and travel take up. I mean, you know as well as me that even if you're only spending 5 hours at work on a given day, it still take time to iron your clothes, make yourself presentable, travel time, etc... it's not "just 5 hours", you know? Like today, I had work 5am-10.30ish. I finished, went to karate for an hour, then came home and slept until 6pm. 6PM. I've lost a whole day over "just 5 hours" work... that and I'm gonna be a fking energiser bunny until 3am coz I'm not fkin tired now.

Anywayz... you're working too much... you can't "time manage" time you simply don't have.
You're wearing yourself down like I did - you aren't doing yourself any favours in the long-run.

Solution: work less.

Haha I used to be one of those people, then I became a 75%-er and it kind of feels like I have to get really really good marks this semester to make up for the fact that I'm only doing 3. And I kind of feel like a slacker because I couldn't handle a full time load >_>

I know what you mean about working. Wed and Fri I leave home at 7am and don't usually get home til 8.30pm... so it's a lot more than the 8.5 hours I'm rostered for.

I can't actually cut it down any more - I have too much work in my job that I need the two full days to complete. And the Tuesday night one is choir, which is music-related and therefore the only thing keeping me sane at the moment, so that's not really an option either...

Blah. I hate uni. >_>
