I've heard of many stories of people who never enrolled to vote, and were never fined or anything, and have lived here for years (mainly parents who came over here from a different country refusing to vote). Except one of which was found out 20 years later, she got a fine of some sorts for not enrolling for one year, and then now has to vote.

It's not that bad.. I'm not going to vote either..

Voting at federal elections has been compulsory since 1924 for all citizens on the Commonwealth electoral roll. Anyone who is unable to provide a valid and sufficient reason to the Divisional Returning Officer for failure to vote at a federal election and who does not wish to have the matter dealt with by a Magistrates Court may pay a penalty of $20 (section 245).

no I meant if you pay the penalty and don't choose to fight it out in the mag's court you won't get a conviction recorded against your name

If you don't enrol then you won't get caught. If you enrol and don't vote then you will get caught. Not enrolling is illegal, but nothign is illegal unless you get caught. Only way you can get caught is if you don't enrol and then you get involved with police over something and they discover that you haven't enrolled.

Oh, and you DO get a criminal record because not voting in an election is definitely a crime serious enough to make you a criminal...

They sent me reminders to enroll at least once a month since my birthday, so now I have like 4 application forms lying around. Then they mentioned some crap about a fine if I didn't fill out my form within a fortnight so I finally enrolled.

And I'm not even going to be 18 for a while.

You can enroll in person at your local AEC office (theres a locator thingy on their website) mine is like a 5 minute walk, so i probably will enroll. I'm going to be in the city tomorrow on an excursion tomorrow as well so i could also take care of it there.

I think its too late at this point to send it via snail mail (obviously) but theres still time to fax it or enroll in person.

If you have enrolled you'll get a letter in the mail about a postal vote for people who are unable to vote at a polling station.

But if you're 18 and you didn't enrol, it's not the end of the world, just do it in the next 3 years :P

I got one of those in the mail today, actually... I've obviously been enrolled for a few years though.
