A NEW Zealand ski outfitter has said a shoplifting binge by students from Xavier College just added to the growing list of Australians robbing Kiwi shops in Queenstown.
A gang of students from the exclusive private school hit the slopes and then hit the shops, but that's nothing new for visiting Australian students, according to one retailer

What is it about upper-middle class kids going to private schools that makes them feel entitled to free merchandise in NZ?

I suppose it only made the newspaper because there wasn't anything else that was news-worthy on the day, so the newspaper(s) decided to run this story and plus, Xavier College, is a well-known school which has made the news for these types of incidents in the past.

Or maybe the media has a fascination with good girls/boys gone bad. According to the article, Xavier's muck day antics in 2008 made 'international headlines'. How serious was it? Nothing I doubt, more serious than sticking a cow up on the 2nd floor (cows can't travel down stairs) or paving the floors in fish oil - which were done the same year at another "elite" school. .

FFS and I had garbo duty that day as well.

And to be absolutely honest, the school is not at fault here at all. It's not the school's fault that some kids decided to steal shit and it's unfair for such a reputation to be imposed on a school. The media are pouncing on it because this is an elite school where shit goes down.

One off events sure, but every year for a while now, there's been some new story from Xavier. There were plenty that weren't reported as well, I went to school just down the road from them :S

They're probably no worse than a ton of other schools, but I get the feeling there's something more systemic wrong.

The media is making a big deal out of it because its Xavier. The public has been outraged at their antics before and thats the only reason this is news worthy. The article itself even said its a common thing for Australian's from other schools to do it when they're there.
