I've only seen the trailers and I can say honestly say that it's actually awesome, albeit the latest one looks like a commercial for a movie and not a game.  But still, I'm going to get it.  Just not now because:

Is this game really good? Or is it something only hardcore fans will understand? I never played the original Starcraft.

Believe it or not though, I played the original Warcraft and Warcraft II... before the whole Warcraft franchise became analogous with internet addiction.
I also remember playing Duke Nukem, Doom II, and Dune.

What sort of game play does Starcraft II have?

RTS but to a bigger scale of warcraft, and instead of orcs u have aliens, instead of elves you have super teched up aliens and instead of humans u have HUMANS WITH GUNS.
