To cut it short, i have to write a practice essay on the following question, its just that I'm having trouble simplifying the question.

"I suppose everyone has to witness something ghastly one day"
Look Both Ways argues in the end it is impossible to prevent personal suffering - Discuss

any help would be appreciated.

Firstly look at the question:

"in the end it is impossible to prevent personal suffering"

what does Meryl see everywhere? What does Nick see everywhere?

then look at the quote:

"I suppose everyone has to witness something ghastly one day"

What does Meryl witness?
How does this differ from her initial reaction to the event she witnesses?

Hope that somewhat helps - if you can answer those questions, you will be then able to work out what stuff needs to be put in the essay
